Situated in the Mohave Desert, Quartzsite is best known for its great numbers of “snowbirds” (winter visitors, as they are called), who flock to this community each year in vast numbers, pulling mobile homes with them. Visitors appreciate the sunshine and inexpensive, quiet living Quartzsite affords. The town hosts an annual rock and mineral show in February that attracts more than 850,000 people. Parker is a river town—part California beach, part Arizona river rat—and exists for power and water sports. Late summer can be brutal. August temperatures climb to 120 degrees, sometimes for a week at a time. Each year the community hosts an international inner tube race in mid-June. It attracts hundreds of dedicated tubers, who travel along the 7 miles in a variety of outlandish outfits. Lake Havasu City, established in 1963, was designed as a self-sufficient, planned community for several thousand residents. Although somewhat isolated from the rest of the state, it continues to attract newcomers and is growing into an attractive community for people who love a quiet, water-recreation lifestyle. Don’t expect to see any “big city” stuff here. Come to relax, not for fine dining. Lake Havasu City is strictly small-town. This chapter from the DayTrips series describes many fascinating, exciting, (and many free of charge) things to do, most within a two-hour drive of Phoenix. Each Day Trip includes destination highlights, places to visit along the way, choice restaurants and lodging, and shopping
